Copyediting?

So what is copyediting, anyway?
As a copyeditor, I review written work of all types for five basic aspects:

CLARITY

Does your writing say what you mean, without confusion?
Does every single word bring maximum impact to your written product and your goal?

Is your writing easy to understand? Does it flow?
Does it lead your reader where you want to take them?

Does each part of your written work belong to the larger piece?
Does each paragraph lead into the next? Does every sentence contribute?

Is your work redundant (unnecessary words)?
Are there any phrases that could be clarified?

(Oh yes, the G word – grammar! )
Are any words misspelled? Did you write “there,” but meant “their”?
What about a missing comma or period?
